In the first round, I met Cizmadia of Hungary,
the other fifth place finisher from the 1999
World Championships. The match ended quickly
as I turned an o-uchigari into an ippon in
just 30 seconds. |

Maeda of Japan was titled the 1999 World
Champion less than a year prior to the Olympics
and was the favorite to win gold in Sydney.
I had fought against her three times in the
last two years and had lost all three. However,
I learned a great deal from my previous encounters
and from films that I reviewed. I scored
a wazaari early in the match with an o-sotomakikomi.
With the lead, I kept a strong offense sticking
to my strategy. I scored two more yukos and
managed to evade Maeda's signature morote-seoinage
for the win. |

My quarterfinal match against Vandenhende
of France posed my biggest challenge. Her
lefty style is combined with exceptional
physical strength. My efforts to find and
create openings to attack were blocked and
countered for a yuko and then a koka. Halfway
through the match, I attenpted o-goshi while
she was reaching high for her left grip but
I was countered for a solid ippon in her
favor. Vandenhende, '97 World Champion continued
her winning streak by defeating VonReKowski
of Germany in the semi-finals then Li of
China in the finals to become 63kg 2000 Olympic
gold medalist. |

My chances for bronze were still alive as
I faced S.Jung of Korea in the reparcharge.
I scored a yuko early by countering with
haraigoshi as she attempted the same technique.
Iwas controlling action but was given a shido
by the referee for being too defensive. Even
with the minor penalty, I was still ahead
in points. With less than 30seconds left
on the clock, S.Jung made an attempt at haraigoshi.
We fell to the ground and with slow continuation
she scored a yuko to pu her in the le4ad.
The clock esxpired , allowing S. Jung to
advance to the next round while I finished
my Olympic day in Sydney in ninth place.
S.Jung continued to defeat Dhahri of Tunisia
then Gal of Italy for the bronze medal. |
